"More
then 3,500 people basked in the sunshine and community spirit as
three churches held a free millennium party for the people at
Baffins Pond.
There was free music, free food, free entertainment and plenty
of glorious weather when St Josephs Roman Catholic Church,
Tangier Baptist Church and St Cuthbert's C of E Church put on
the event at the pond.
The party was designed to bring the community together for the
day as well as give something back to the people who have
supported the three churches over the years. One of the
organisers Ian Thorburn said: 'It was a fantastic day out for
everyone. We had a great response from the public and there were
people of all ages there and families brought along their
picnics, sitting out in the park in the sun.'
Live music during the day was provided by the Sound of Steel
band from Portchester, HMS Nelson Royal Naval Volunteer Band and
the Netley and Hamble Royal British Legion Drums and Pipes band.
The evening finished with a live performance from the Chris
Walker jazz band and people listened to the music in a
specially-built marquee or out in the open air.
Mr Thorburn added: We received nothing but positive reactions
from those who attended and there is even talk of holding
similar events next year." (reported in Portsmouth
Evening News 21/06/00).
